May 22 releases included a new collaborative project from Soccer Mommy and a posthumous release from Singer-songwriter Cady Groves.

Happy New Music Friday! It’s been another great week of incredible releases, and here are a few of my favorite new tracks.

  1. blue by Kamal.

This artist was brand new to me this week. Kamal. is a young artist from North West London with over 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. blue is a bittersweet trick about losing yourself in the person you adore. Kamal. does a great job of describing the war with self that one has post-breakup. Although a lot of the chorus details the singer’s dedication to moving forward and not giving into someone who doesn’t return that affection, he also is able to bring in sweet details of a former lover that will have you swooning in the milky daydream of love.

2. I Think You’re Alright by Soccer Mommy

Soccer Mommy was an artist that I fell in love with in late 2019, and the indie artists has hooked me in with every release ever since. This latest release is actually part of Sophie’s ongoing project in which her and her artist friends cover each other’s songs. Not only do I think that this concept is incredibly interesting, but I think the production of this cover is incredible. The lyrics flow like your listening to a stream of consciousness in your mind when it’s paired with Soccer Mommy’s well-known haunting tone.

3. Aeroplane by Greer

Greer is a band that I became introduced to through the infamous Vine app years ago, and tried to stay connected to after the platform discontinued. Although the group hasn’t released many tracks yet, I think it’s fair to say that Aeroplane is my favorite song that they’ve produced so far. I love the big 60s production that has become central to the group’s sound and the playful vocal patterns that the singers use ooze emotion when explaining the heart-wrenching feeling that one gets when they are just a little too late.

4. Don’t Wanna by HAIM

As a huge fan of the three-piece from the start, I’ve been excited to see that HAIM has released a ton of fun summer singles in 2020. Don’t wanna is a fun, vibrant tune about falling in love with someone you shouldn’t that I think will be a perfect addition to anyone’s summer playlist.

5. Bless My Heart by Cady Groves

A bittersweet release to say the least. I was heartbroken to find out that southern singer-songwriter passed away in early May, but I am happy that her team decided to release her single “Bless My Heart” and her upcoming album in her memory. This song encapsulates everything that is Cady. The heart-breaking storytelling, the candid lyrics and vivacious energy that never quits. I suggest that you take a listen to this track, as well as listen to the rest of her unfortunately short discography to see just how much of a unique and powerful writer this woman was.
