This Week In Music: July 10
There were a lot of amazing tunes released during the second week of July. Here are some of my personal favorites.
- Life’s a Mess by Juice WRLD and Halsey
Post-humorous releases are always a touchy subject, but I had to review this collaboration from the late Juice WRLD and one of my favorite artists at the moment, Halsey. This song is a sweet lullaby to the one who changes your world for the better. The lyrics are vulnerable and gentle, and both artists voices melt sweetly together in the chorus.
2. Smoke Signals by Cavetown and Tessa Violet
This song is a beautiful dedication to a love lost. Cavetown’s lyricism always brings a lot of warmth to my hopeless romantic heart. Both Cavetown and Tessa Violet’s vocals contain that grit and emotional impact that brings this track about sending any kind of acknowledgment you can to the one you love to life. Also, the video is an indie kid’s dream with enough shaky early film techniques and vast field imagery to feed your nostalgic soul for days.
3. Purple Haze by Zella Day
Zella’s return has been something that fans have been awaiting for since her last album in 2015. Although the singer has released a few singles earlier this year, her latest release is my current favorite. It’s coated with beautiful imagery from sugar-coated ozone to technicolor kisses and it’s psychedelic nature brings a calming effect after every listen. It’s no surprise that the indie king himself, Tame Impala, had his hand in the video creation due to its kaleidoscope of color and winding timeline.
4. Rollerskating by Sizzy Rocket
The latest release from the pop darling is her most vulnerable yet. Rollerskating is a perfect way to describe the state of your heart when it’s fresh out of a relationship, wheels turning but always landing back in that starting position….going in circles in your mind. The light production and soft vocals are quite a contrast from the singer’s previous grungy moments, but they both definitely bring this dreamy track to light.
5. Take Me Away by The Driver Era
This track is an instant driving classic. The repetitive motion this track puts your mind through really drives home the message of wanting to push away any emotions and just live. The over a minute long instrumental close to this track solidifies its place on any summertime vibing playlist.
